G7 Digital & Tech Working Group Finalizes Reporting Framework for Advanced AI Systems

An essential step toward the promotion, development, and ethical application of AI

Date 23 december 2024

The Italian G7 Presidency is pleased to announce the conclusion of discussions and the finalization of the Reporting Framework for the Hiroshima Process International Code of Conduct for Organizations Developing Advanced AI Systems. This achievement underscores the G7's ongoing commitment to advancing safe, secure, and trustworthy AI.

The Reporting Framework aims to promote transparency and accountability among organizations developing advanced AI systems. It will facilitate comparability around risk mitigation measures and contribute to identifying and disseminating good practices.

Based on the 11 actions of the Hiroshima AI Process International Code of Conduct, the Reporting Framework includes a set of structured questions to guide organizations in aligning their practices with the Code of Conduct. An interactive online interface, set to launch in early 2025, will enable organizations to report on their practices and policies in alignment with these actions.

The Framework was developed in cooperation with the OECD and through a collaborative, multistakeholder approach, incorporating input from the private sector, academia, civil society, and research institutions during an open pilot phase.

A key priority of the Italian  G7  Presidency in 2024 was to facilitate the adoption of the Hiroshima AI Process International Code of Conduct, developed as an outcome of the  G7  Hiroshima  AI  Process under the G7 Japanese Presidency. At the request of the G7 membership and in line with the commitments outlined in the Trento Declaration (PDF) (March 15, 2024), the G7 Digital and Tech Working Group under the Italian Presidency called on the OECD to identify and develop appropriate mechanisms to monitor the voluntary adoption of the Hiroshima AI Process International Code of Conduct by organizations choosing to implement it.

G7 Leaders in their Apulia Communiqué (PDF) reaffirmed their commitment to developing a Reporting Framework, in cooperation with the OECD. Building on this, the G7 Joint Statement adopted at the Digital and Technology Ministerial Meeting (October 15, Cernobbio) resolved to complete and advance the Reporting Framework by the end of the year.

The finalization of the Reporting Framework represents a critical milestone in the G7's commitment to ensuring the safe, secure, and trustworthy development, deployment, and use of advanced AI systems.
